Perplexity & Copilot Restaurant Recommendations: How to Become a Cited Source

Beyond ChatGPT and Gemini, two smaller but fast-growing engines also decide who gets recommended to guests: Perplexity and Microsoft Copilot. They work differently — and with both, the goal is the same: to make your venue the cited source.

The two fast-growing „little siblings”

ChatGPT (~64%) and Gemini (~21%) take most of the market, but some of your guests already use Perplexity and Microsoft Copilot when they ask „where should I go for dinner tonight?”. In the global AI-assistant market in March 2026, Perplexity sat at ~2% and Copilot at ~1.1% (FatJoe) — small, but growing fast, and their users ask exactly the decision-stage, search-like questions that matter.

Perplexity is an „answer engine”: it doesn't return a list of links, it returns a cited answer assembled from 3-5 sources. Copilot is Microsoft's AI assistant, drawing on the Bing search index and the Bing Places business database. What they share: they don't rank like classic Google — they cite from a narrow source pool, and the goal is for you to be one of those cited sources.

This is the ONLY article in the cluster dedicated to these two engines and to the „how to become a cited source” angle. If you want to get to grips with the two big engines first, read our AI in hospitality piece.

Perplexity restaurant recommendation: it doesn't rank the way Google does

Perplexity pulls 3-5 sources into every answer and shows you where each fact came from. In hospitality, much of that source set comes from review platforms and directories. Analysis by Foundation Marketing and AirOps (28M+ AI responses, Q4 2025) found Perplexity draws 62.1% of its local-discovery citations from Yelp, a 4.9x lead over the next platform.

The same study, aggregated across engines, shows Yelp's dominance for restaurants too: Yelp delivered 14,100 citations versus TripAdvisor's 4,327. On the Google AI Mode side the picture is similar: among the most-cited domains, Yelp is ~5.8% and TripAdvisor ~4.1% (Ahrefs, Mar-Aug 2025). The lesson is simple: your own website matters, but AI cites external, third-party-validated pages — where others talk about you — far more often.

Note: Perplexity does not use Yelp data to train its own language models — it runs GPT and Claude — it surfaces that data directly in the answer.

The Yelp Fusion license (March 2024)

In mid-March 2024, Perplexity struck a data-licensing deal with Yelp (Yelp Fusion). From then on, its answers to local searches surface Yelp data directly:

Name, address, phone, hours, price level, photos, star ratings, reviews and a direct Yelp link — even a map. In other words, the backbone of Perplexity's hospitality answers is a third party's verified listing, not your own website.

Microsoft Copilot: Bing index + Bing Places + Google reviews

Copilot's main local source is the Bing search index and Bing Places for Business — and as of August 2025, something important changed:

  • Bing index — Copilot works first from the open web indexed by Bing. If you're not in Bing's index, you drop out of the source pool entirely.
  • Bing Places for Business — relaunched on October 3, 2025 (now under bing.com/forbusiness) with an AI Recommendation Tool that flags missing hours, photos, categories or links. Worth claiming and completing the profile.
  • Google Maps reviews — since August 2025, Copilot also surfaces Google reviews on its local cards, using review volume and sentiment (NLP) as quality signals.
  • A complete listing is mandatory — a missing category or attribute acts as a „knock-out” filter: if the requested trait (e.g. „terrace”, „dog-friendly”) isn't ticked, the engine tends to stay silent and skip you.

The „knock-out” filters: why many venues fail at the start

Both Perplexity and Copilot first filter for whether you're eligible at all — and only then look at reviews. Analysis suggests ~80% of local AI recommendations come from businesses with synchronized, consistent data. Here's how the engine decides whether you even enter the picture:

How you get knocked out

  • Incomplete or inconsistent NAP (name-address-phone) across platforms
  • No precise category set (e.g. just „bar” instead of „cocktail bar”)
  • Missing attributes: terrace, live music, dog-friendly, good for groups
  • Few or stale reviews, low response rate
  • Not in Bing's index / incomplete Yelp listing

How you get into the source pool

  • Consistent NAP across every platform (Google, Bing, Facebook, Yelp)
  • Precise primary category + every relevant attribute ticked
  • High review volume, fresh reviews, active responses
  • Claimed, complete listing in Bing Places and Google Business Profile
  • Indexed, crawlable site with facts (hours, menu, address)

The decisive signals you control — on both engines

The good news: you don't need to „win” Bing's ranking. You just need to be indexed, and to strengthen the signals you control. They're the same on both engines:

  • Claimed, complete listing — a claimed and filled-out Google Business Profile + Bing Places, with the right category and attributes.
  • NAP consistency — the same name, address and phone everywhere; AI cross-checks your listings.
  • Review volume and freshness — AI-recommended restaurants average 3.6x more reviews (3,424 vs 955, MyPlace 2026); content updated within 30 days gets 3.2x more citations (SOCi 2026).
  • Active responses — SOCi found venues with sub-5% response rates are „effectively invisible” in AI recommendations; Copilot explicitly reads the sentiment of your Google reviews.
  • Above 4.4 stars, volume decides — the star rating is a threshold (above ~4.3 for ChatGPT, ~4.1 for Perplexity, ~3.9 for Gemini); past 4.4, the lever is review volume, freshness and responses (MyPlace 2026).

How to become a CITED source

„Being a cited source” means that when Perplexity or Copilot assembles its answer, it links to your venue / a page about you. The strongest documented lever is third-party validation — AirOps found brands are 6.5x more likely to be cited via external sources than from their own domain, and ~90% of external mentions come from listicles, comparisons and review roundups. Active presence on review platforms gives ~3x higher citation probability (ZipTie). Concrete tactics:

  • Crawlable, static HTML — keep the facts (hours, address, menu, price level) server-rendered, not hidden in JavaScript, so AI crawlers can read them.
  • Structured data (schema) — LocalBusiness/Restaurant, AggregateRating, Review, OpeningHours, FAQPage; it reduces ambiguity and aids AI eligibility (see our schema article).
  • Fact-dense, fresh content — dated, review-rich pages; GEO research (Princeton, KDD 2024) found statistics, quotations and source citation can lift visibility by up to +40%, while keyword stuffing hurts.
  • Third-party validation — get onto review platforms (Google, Bing/Yelp, TripAdvisor, Facebook) and local „best restaurants/cafés” listicles; this is the ~3x citation lever.
  • A steady stream of fresh reviews — since GPT-5 (Aug 2025), AI re-reads the web in near real time; a continuous, answered review stream compounds faster than ever.

The Hungarian reality: Yelp isn't the main lever here

The US data above is illustrative: Yelp is weak in Hungary, Foursquare is negligible, and Facebook is secondary. Here Google dominates search (~97%), and the Google review is the dominant public signal that Bing's index — and therefore Copilot — reads. So for a Hungarian venue the main levers are: a complete Google Business Profile, fresh and answered Google reviews, plus Bing Places and a Facebook page as complementary surfaces.

Add the Hungarian editorial lists too — Dining Guide TOP100, Michelin Hungary, Time Out Budapest, We Love Budapest, DiningCity.hu, and Winelovers 100 for wineries — because these listicles supply much of the third-party citation flow. We cover the schema and review-side to-dos in detail in our Google Business Profile and local SEO and QR-code review collection articles.

This is where ThanksBot's honest role comes in: it does not „put you into Perplexity or Copilot” — no tool can. What it genuinely strengthens is review volume, freshness and response rate: it automatically replies to every review in 50+ languages, and helps you collect more fresh reviews via QR codes. It feeds exactly the Google-side signals these engines read — through Bing's index and Google reviews — when they decide whom to cite.

Frequently Asked Questions

How does Perplexity recommend restaurants, and where does it get the data?

Perplexity is an „answer engine”: instead of a list of links, it gives a cited answer assembled from typically 3-5 sources. In hospitality its sources are largely review platforms and directories — thanks to the March 2024 Yelp Fusion license, it surfaces Yelp's name, address, hours, photos, stars and reviews directly, plus a map and a Yelp link. A Foundation Marketing and AirOps analysis found Yelp supplies 62.1% of Perplexity's local-discovery citations.

What is Yelp Fusion, and does it matter in Hungary?

Yelp Fusion is the data-licensing deal struck in March 2024 that lets Perplexity surface Yelp business data directly in its answers. In the US market it's Perplexity's most important hospitality source. In Hungary, though, Yelp is weak, so it isn't the main lever here — instead, the Google review is the dominant public signal that Bing's index, and therefore Copilot, reads.

Does Microsoft Copilot use Google reviews?

Yes. Copilot's main local sources are the Bing search index and Bing Places for Business, but since August 2025 its local cards also surface Google Maps reviews, using review volume and sentiment (NLP) as quality signals. So Hungarian venues should focus on fresh, answered Google reviews too.

What does it mean to be a „cited source” in an AI answer, and how do I achieve it?

It means that when Perplexity or Copilot assembles its answer, it links to your venue or a page about you as a source. You achieve it with crawlable, static HTML and structured data (schema), with fact-dense, fresh content, and above all with third-party validation: review platforms and local „best of” listicles. AirOps found brands are 6.5x more likely to be cited via external sources than from their own domain.

Does my restaurant need a Bing Places for Business account?

It's worth it. Copilot works from the Bing index and Bing Places, which was relaunched on October 3, 2025 with an AI Recommendation Tool that flags missing hours, photos, categories or links. A complete, accurate Bing Places listing helps you avoid the „knock-out” filter, where a missing category or attribute would otherwise cause the engine to skip you.

Why are brands cited more often from external sites than from their own website?

Because AI treats a third-party-verified source as more trustworthy: if others (reviews, listicles, directories) talk about you, that's independent confirmation. AirOps data shows 85% of brand mentions come from external domains (and only ~13% from the brand's own domain), and brands are cited 6.5x more often via external sources than from their own domain; active presence on review platforms gives ~3x higher citation probability. Your website still matters, but the external signals — reviews, responses, lists — decide.
