We Analyzed 3,717 Hungarian Restaurants: 43% Don't Reply to Google Reviews

The first Hungarian study on hospitality venues' Google review management habits — based on analysis of 6 million reviews.

If you own a restaurant, cafe, or any kind of hospitality venue, you have probably experienced this: a review comes in on Google, and you are not sure whether to reply, what to write, or whether it is even worth the effort.

You are not alone. We analyzed 3,717 Hungarian hospitality venues and examined 6,022,208 Google reviews to find out how Hungarian restaurants, cafes, and fast-food chains handle review management — and why it matters for your bottom line.

More than half of Hungarian venues stay silent

The most striking finding of the study comes down to a single number:

43.4% of the venues studied never reply to Google reviews at all.

The picture becomes even more nuanced when we look at the full response pattern:

Response behaviorShare
Never responds43.4%
Responds occasionally31.5%
Responds regularly17.9%
Only responds to negatives7.3%

This means only 17.9% of Hungarian hospitality venues actively and consistently manage their Google reviews. The remaining 82% either ignore them entirely or deal with them sporadically.

By international standards, this is a significant gap. Western European and American studies show the industry-average response rate exceeds 50%, and for restaurant chains it reaches 60%.

Yet the quality is there — ratings are high

What is surprising: Hungarian venues don't ignore reviews because their service is poor. Quite the opposite:

92.5% of the venues studied have a rating above 4 stars.

RatingShare of venues
4+ stars92.5%
3–4 stars7.1%
Below 3 stars0.3%

The average Hungarian hospitality venue received a 4.43-star rating on Google. This indicates that guests are fundamentally satisfied — the problem is not the kitchen or the service, but what happens afterward: the lack of response to reviews.

Why is not responding a problem?

Three reasons:

  1. 1

Google factors response rate into ranking

One of the well-known factors in Local SEO is the rate at which a business responds to reviews. Google's algorithm treats regular replies as an activity signal — and silence as inactivity. Venues in the "responds frequently" category statistically achieve higher positions on Google Maps.

  2. 2

    Guests read your replies

International research shows that 97% of consumers read business responses to reviews. When someone clicks on your profile after searching "restaurant near me," they don't just look at the stars — they check how you handle feedback. If there is silence, it creates uncertainty.

  3. 3

An unanswered negative review scares away twice as many guests

A well-crafted response to a negative review, on the other hand, builds more trust than ten positive ratings. Potential guests look specifically at how you handle problems — because they know that not every dinner is perfect.

Volume matters too — 1,620 reviews per venue

The venues studied have an average of 1,620 reviews. This number alone shows why manual review management is not realistic:

If you spend an average of 3 minutes per review (read, think, write), the monthly workload based on incoming reviews looks like this:

New reviews/monthShare of venues
0–1057.0%
10–2019.7%
20–308.8%
30–507.0%
50+7.5%

For venues receiving 50+ reviews per month (7.5% of those studied), manual response is essentially a part-time job. Even for smaller venues, it takes 15-30 minutes per week — time most owners would rather spend on guests, the kitchen, or administration.

Budapest dominates, but other cities are not far behind

The geographical distribution is not surprising, but worth examining:

CityVenuesShare
Budapest1,41037.9%
Szeged992.7%
Debrecen772.1%
Pécs681.8%
Miskolc671.8%
Győr551.5%

Budapest leads by a wide margin, but hospitality venues in other major cities also receive a significant number of reviews. The review management problem is not a Budapest-specific issue — it is a nationwide phenomenon.

Venue type breakdown

TypeShare
Restaurant (traditional)51.8%
Fast food10.1%
Pizzeria6.9%
Cafe5.8%
Coffee shop2.7%
Hungarian restaurant2.2%
Hotel2.1%

Restaurants make up more than half of the sample, but the phenomenon applies to every type of hospitality venue.

What does this mean for your business?

Three things emerge from the data:

  • The competitive advantage is within reach. If you are the venue in your area that regularly and professionally responds to every review, you are already in the top 18%. It does not require millions — just consistency.
  • The quality is there; the communication is missing. With a star rating above 92.5%, Hungarian hospitality venues fundamentally deliver good service. The gap is in review management — and that is a solvable problem.
  • Scaling with human effort is not realistic. An average of 1,620 reviews per venue, up to 50 new ones per month — your waiter will not handle this in the evening, and the owner will not do it on Sunday afternoon. This requires automated systems.

How does ThanksBot solve this?

ThanksBot was built precisely for this problem. It generates automatic AI responses to every Google review — 24/7, in your tone of voice, personalized:

  • No templates. Every response reacts to the specific content of the review: if the guest writes about the terrace, the reply reflects that.
  • Diplomatic handling of negative reviews. It does not argue or make excuses — it thanks, acknowledges, and takes it private.
  • Responds in 50+ languages. Foreign guests receive a reply in their native language — automatically.
  • Monthly report on what your guests actually think: what your strengths are, where you need to improve, and what trends are emerging.

If your business is among the 43% that never respond — or the 31% that only respond sometimes — it is time to change that.

Methodology

The study examined 3,717 Hungarian restaurants and cafes, analyzing a total of 6,022,208 Google reviews. Data was collected using a combination of the Google Maps API and web scraping during the 2025–2026 period. Only active, Hungary-based businesses were included in the sample. Metrics analyzed: ratings, review counts, response behavior, geographical distribution, and venue type breakdown.

The "responds / does not respond" categorization was based on manual and automated verification of the most recent reviews. The study examined only Google Maps reviews — Facebook, TripAdvisor, and other platforms were not included.
